45 Percent of Teens Indonesia Age 13-19 Smoker
              

           Non-governmental organizations Lantern Child Indonesia noted the number of children and adolescents who become smokers in the country is steadily increasing due to incessant cigarette advertising targeting children and youth segment.

Based on a survey of smokers number of children continue to rise, 45 percent of teens aged 13-19 were smokers, while the data of Global Youth Tobacco Survey said Indonesia is the country with the largest number of teenage smokers in Asia, "said Executive Director of Children Lantern Indonesia, Herry Chariansyah on Wednesday .

          According to Herry, the increase in the number of child and adolescent smokers due to tobacco advertising creates the impression that smoking is something that is good and normal.

     "70 percent of teens have a positive impression on cigarette advertising and 50 percent of teens feel more confident as imaged in the ad," he said.   

              

 More alarming, said Herry, 37 percent of smokers feel cool like the image that was built in advertising and believe smoking will have a lot of friends.

      "Therefore, the state must create rules that protect children from the dangers of smoking and for this the existing regulations have not been able to restrict children's access to cigarettes," he said.

He asserted cigarettes are legal products but not normal and not an anti Lantern Indonesian Children to cigarettes but that needs to be done is the restriction of access to the child.

      "All these aim to build a better civilization so that children are not exposed to smoking early on," he said.
